How to Wake A Computer or Monitor From Sleep, Suspend or Hibernate. This article explains how to wake up a sleeping computer, and what to do if the normal methods don’t work.

How Do I Wake Up My Computer From Sleep?

Regardless of the operating system you’re using, turning off sleep mode is as simple as waking up the computer, which you can do by simply interacting with it in some way.

Usually, this means one of the following:

  • Move the mouse
  • Swipe the touchpad
  • Press any key on the keyboard

Some devices are a little different, and will respond only after you press the power button or a special sleep key. Give all of these actions a try if you’re not sure how your specific computer wakes up: Wiggle the mouse a few times, strike a few of the keys, and then press the power button once to get it going.

Don’t press and hold the power button, or it will shut down the computer. Of course, that is another way to wake it up (see below), but it also increases the risk of data corruption, so don’t try it until you have to.

What is the difference between Sleep and Hibernate in Windows?

Sleep mode is a power saving state that stops all actions on the computer. Any open documents and applications are moved to the system memory (RAM) and the computer goes to a low-power state. This is similar to pausing a movie DVD. The computer is still powered on, but uses low power. Devices like monitors also use sleep mode to save power consumption.

Cause

Waking the computer from a sleep mode allows you to quickly resume normal, full-power operation within a few seconds.

To wake up a computer or the monitor from sleep or hibernate, move the mouse or press any key on the keyboard. If this does not work, press the power button to wake up the computer.

NOTE: Monitors will wake up from sleep mode as soon as they detect a video signal from the computer. If the monitor does not wake up from sleep mode, ensure that the computer is not in sleep or hibernate mode.
